FEATURED Vienna hotels
Austria's capital and most lustrous city is also one of the globe's great destinations. The old part of the city has been, by UNESCO, designated a World Heritage Site, and during each year the tourists outnumber the local population at a rate of around three to one.
It has also considered the city with the best quality of life in the world, and has an illustrious history which includes many eras of European civilization. It is famous for having been the occasional home, and often home, for some of the greatest composers and painters. All this considered, you'll hardly be surprised that the city boasts some very fine hotels. There are guest houses, as well as small boutique lodgings which convey an intimacy and alternate between classical style and contemporary design, then there are the budget hotels for those who would rather be spending their money on seeing the sights, perhaps going to the State Opera House, which is considered the finest in Europe. But it is also a city of business and is home to the headquarters of many of the globe's most respected international organizations. These include the branches of the United Nations and OPEC, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. It is the main destination for large conventions worldwide, and many of those who come for a convention take time to see the sights and enjoy just some of the myriad enticements of local life.
It's perhaps unfair to the rest of Europe but the city has more than its fair share of five-star hotels. These are often to be found in heritage buildings which have an Art Deco design, which was very prominent during the early twentieth century in the city, while some are located in even older buildings. If you take rooms near or on the legendary Ringstraße, you'll be perfectly positioned to enjoy the most famous attractions of the city. St Stephen's Cathedral is close by as is the State Opera House, which offers Operas at their most critically acclaimed.
The city is also a hive of hotels with superb spas. There is something special about the best local spas and many of them are to be found on the premises of the best accommodations. You'll discover, in the buildings, spas which are veritable sanctuaries within sanctuaries and sometimes cover more than one floor. Enjoy the full gamut of regal treatments and therapies, a Finnish steam room, Jacuzzis or, if you just want to look you best for the opera, a facial. And there are many reasons to look your best in Vienna, even if it's just to be reverent of the sheer magnificence of gazing at Gustav Klimt's most famous painting, The Kiss. He did, of course, paint more than one "Kiss", but the most familiar of them is one of the country's prize attractions.
One thing that you'll find hard to do in the city is eat in a poor restaurant. The hotels mostly offer fine dining, and if you're staying in a good one, you're likely to be seated in a restaurant which has many awards to its credit. Don't only indulge your appetite for haute cuisine, since the city is famous for its own culinary wonders. There is the legendary breaded veal cutlet dish, the Wiener Schnitzel, which you'll find at all good restaurants with a traditional sensibility, while the art of the decadent dessert is taken very seriously. Chocoholics will head for the sachertorte, that rich chocolate cake suffused with apricots. And the city is also know for having its own vineyards, so you're more than likely to find yourself enjoying a glass of wine which was created not too far from where you're eating.
Your hotel, perhaps in the piano lounge, will offer you coffee. Don't deny this temptation. There is some debate, but Vienna is largely credited with being the city to first have filtered coffee and has always been a haven for coffee lovers. For those who are used Italian or African coffees, the special Austrian coffee is to be savored, since it is generally considered more refined and less earthy than the coffees of most other nations.
From the theater and opera, to the museums and parks, you only have to speak to the front desk of your hotel, budget or luxury, to find out how to the best out of a city which is the envy of many nations.
